North West Recycling is one of the largest independent waste management companies operating in the north of England, offering services that include skip hire for residential and commercial use, waste sorting, recycling, and landfill diversion, and other waste management solutions.

Greyhound Studio was brought on board during an external contractor-led digital transformation period. We were tasked with developing their first website, refreshing their brand identity, and incorporating a new, custom-built booking system based on Weighsoft, a specialist CRM and operations platform used in the waste and recycling industries.

The problem

Typically, service-based businesses using e-commerce platforms can calculate their costs and profit margins in advance when customers browse, configure, or book services online. Skip hire and waste management companies, however, can only do so after the waste has been processed. Since the skips are rented at a fixed price, this introduces unique considerations around pricing, delivery, and hire duration.

While developing a modern website that matched North West Recycling’s new identity was fairly straightforward and part of what we do daily, building a booking system capable of handling their unique logic flows and integrating it into their CRM system posed a more complex challenge.

The solution

Website and branding refresh

Following page designs specified by the external contractor leading the project, we built a bespoke WordPress website on a custom theme using WordPress’ built-in Gutenberg editor and the Advanced Custom Fields plugin’s integration with it. We designed the site with modularity and ease of use in mind, allowing North West Recycling staff to easily update their content, edit pricing or other metadata, and publish new pages without requiring developer support.

Booking system and custom skip ordering flow

WooCommerce and WooCommerce Booking are powerful and popular WordPress plugins that offer cost-effective and reliable functionality. Using them as a solid basis upon which to develop bespoke functionality, we crafted a custom booking system with a checkout flow specifically suited to skip hire.

We developed a process that captures information such as waste type, loading options — wait & load or pay on fill — and delivery address, dynamically updating pricing as the client configures their order, allowing for straightforward checkout with robust up-selling opportunities.

CRM integration

In a later phase of the project, we integrated the site with the Weighsoft CRM used by North West Recycling to ensure all orders were automatically synced with their internal operations. This meant a fully integrated workflow, allowing for easy central management and a streamlined system that connects the front-end customer-facing website to service fulfilment.
